Not as a dunk, but as an example. Everyday, I notice many, many people who believe the vaccine will not effect testing positive or being contagious at all. Both are very very false. It will likely do both to some degree—we are currently measuring how much. https://twitter.com/dangermouse_l/status/1344686146610229248 …

This also requires journalists who can actually understand and convey this nuances instead of a clickbait.

Right! There’s constant massaging based on the premise that people are not smart enough to understand or too selfish to do the right thing (high filtration masking). The end result is confusion and distrust.

Same as the whole rapid tests aren't accurate argument. As a engineer I get really peeved at this kind of non-logic based thinking. Unfortunately too many people don't have the critical thinking skills to differentiate and if the deliverer seem authentic they buy the argument.

Why do public health people keep misleading us about this stuff?? I definitely got the impression there’s a good chance the vaccine won’t help much with infectiousness... But it sounds like that was a lie.

Personally, I got the message of uncertainty.

Zeynep is your sense that the message is unduly fatalistic about the vaccine improving the daily life of people who get it anytime soon? (That's what I feel like I'm hearing, but maybe my hope that life will become less unbearable pretty quickly post-vaccine is unwarranted.)

Yes, but with a "but". The upside is excellent and near, but we are not out of the woods, yet, and there are dangers that we need to work against. So it's not that we're doomed till 2022. It's that this is excellent but let's play the (still painful) fourth quarter right.
