Might be helpful to assess whether pushback stems from perception of an arrogant “you’re wrong” and “I’m right” framing. Gender certainly plays a role. @zeynep might communicate differently and ruffle feathers less than you, @NateSilver538 and @DouthatNYT.
Hmmm. I'd say "framing" doesn't capture the issue at hand as much and I'd certainly disagree either that I ruffle feathers less or if there's a difference in reaction because of communication style or framing difference.

I know you have meant this as a positive but I really don't think I have a conciliatory tone or style, and the way people sometimes assume I do is weird and wrong, and connected to this assumption that woman: must be conciliatory, or the difference might be framing. I disagree.

Interesting. I don't know that you have a conciliatory tone. What provokes a "circle the wagons" reaction and does that derail the discourse or does it benefit the discourse? Does gender play a role? Does tone? Or is it inevitable and insignificant?
