Did you try and fail to to convince your elderly relatives to avoid holiday gatherings? I have a suggestion. Propose waiting until March. Things are grim now so it's a horrid time to get sick but the US could experience a dramatic turnaround. Hope is real. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/12/wait-until-march/617410/ …pic.twitter.com/RE8QhETaDd

None of my family is getting together. We didn’t at Thanksgiving or for summer birthdays. Those of us in CA are hoping to see each other at May birthdays but still with masks.

Yeah, though I think that wasn't the right message. I think people should have been encouraged to have their gatherings outdoors over the summer.

I think about my Mom telling about not seeing our dad for 2 years while he was in Europe fighting in WWII. I have his V Mail Xmas card he sent to Mom & my sister Dec. 1944. So yes I can hold out to make sure my family is safe. It’s in my genes.

I hear ya! My risk is too high to see anyone, even outside. In isolation since March... but saw very few people since July ‘18 because of other health issues: stuck home & people were "busy"... 2020 hasn’t been much different. Better in some ways as I wasn’t bedridden!

I didn’t see this message come through very well. The discussions tended to use a shorter time horizon (i.e., how we are doing now) rather than in the context of the longer view — use this time now. 1/

This is not to say there was no discussion that it could be, or would be, worse in the fall/winter or there would be no second wave. 2/

did that, I think on your advice, and it's making Christmas being cancelled much easier
