Given the data over the last year, and shown in this thread, I will be eternally perplexed if the US doesn't choose to vaccinate the elderly first and foremost, along with those who take care of them directly. Check out the attached prioritization of Wales, which makes sense. https://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1336841338923278336 …pic.twitter.com/TphcF78tvO

Older people who do not live in care homes can isolate while essential workers cannot. How is a 40 y/o essential worker (e.g. police officer, firefighter, delivery person) different than a 40 y/o carer of residents in care homes in terms of risk?

Those who directly care for the elderly should obviously be in the first phase. The difference with the rest of us is the elderly have exponentially higher risk of dying and severe disease, which in turn crushes hospitals. Not a small amount of difference.

Who do you genuinely think sees and takes care of a greater number of elderly people in a month, an employee at an skilled nursing (elder care) facility or a physician in a hospital or clinic? Average internist is seeing 20+ different geriatrics a day

It's not just about contact but the nature and duration of contact. Also, the elderly in care homes are usually more at risk and can't isolate as well as elderly that can live independently of semi-independently.

Yes, I agree. My comment was about non-medical essential workers not being on the list at all. Someone mentioned Canada doing the same thing as Wales, but in fact I believe service workers are prioritized in Canada.
