Geeky question, is there an explanation for why the Moderna vaccine is stable longer than the Pfizer one in terms of cold storage requirements since they're both mRNA? Or is it just that Moderna tested for longer storage times and Pfizer didn't? Links to long papers welcome!

Yes, even if it required new trials, why not? This is going to be a huge deal for immunizing high-risk groups and for poorer countries especially since mRNA efficacy seems to be significantly higher than the other candidates (that are also good but not as spectacular).

Agreed. I think the question is how to incentivize Moderna to achieve this outcome you know, beyond the obvious benefit to humanity

If may require re-testing and re-approval at this stage to change the lipid container (as a different RNA may interact differently with it)? Biology can surprise, even if it appears as simple as a swap-out of a component.

It’s basically the only originator IIRC, as the mRNA itself is just the protein’s info

Sorry originator -> differentiator

Uğur Şahin/BioNTech stated in an interview recently that they are working on a second generation formulation that is stable at higher temperature (normal refrigeration)

Didn't find the video interview again but it is also contained in this report. https://www.benzinga.com/node/18624004 pic.twitter.com/kwUeE9IUqv

There is likely to be a license in the future. But remember that the Moderna effort was an experiment -- it might have failed. So Pfizer went with the older, more cumbersome tech and they've designed around it. Retrofitting the new Moderna stuff may be hard.
