Given the data over the last year, and shown in this thread, I will be eternally perplexed if the US doesn't choose to vaccinate the elderly first and foremost, along with those who take care of them directly. Check out the attached prioritization of Wales, which makes sense. https://twitter.com/trvrb/status/1336841338923278336 …pic.twitter.com/TphcF78tvO

I disagree. Residents of care homes can be protected by vaccinating their workers. A priority should be getting kids back to school. Adverse effects of closed schools will compound over decades. Closed schools in Europe post WWII had lingering effects.

We can open schools without the full vaccine campaign, the way so many countries have.

You are saying that we could implement public health strategies that would make it ok to reopen schools from an epidemiology perspective. That's not the same as saying we are politically able to reopen schools.

As a parent of a 7 year old who has been out of school for nine months, I will say that vaccinating teachers absolutely has to be our #1 priority after vaccinating health care workers. I understand Europe is back in school, but that's not our lived reality.

Then we need to fix our reality rather than delay a vaccine to those at very high-risk. Everybody is deserving but the risk profile is very steep by age.

One argument against opening schools has been that we'd be killing grandmas who live with children. Now we're talking about *actually* allowing grandmas to die to protect young teachers. Makes no sense.

Obviously we need a stronger grandmas union.

I agree that the issues are complex - and I am glad I am not in position making these decisions. From my perspective, though, it seems a waste of precious resources to vaccinate residents of nursing facilities, who can be reasonably protected by vaccinating facility workers.
