I find comments like these to be so unhelpful. Many WHO-participating countries have done a much better job handling COVID-19 than the U.S. Pinning blame on the WHO, who the U.S. pulled out of this year, just creates a convenient scapegoat & feeds into anti-WHO crackpot theories.https://twitter.com/kprather88/status/1337842302765559810 …

When @WHO? More people are dying while you continue to refuse to send a clear public health message that #covidisairborne . It is so obvious based on increasing scientific evidence. When will you help people end this pandemic? https://twitter.com/jljcolorado/status/1337814014630322176 …

Many who did better explicitly didn’t listen to WHO advice as is, though, and that absolutely needs fixing. “To do better, emulate other countries who didn’t listen to the World Health Organization” really isn’t the position we want to find ourselves in ever again.

But the US pretty much didn’t listen to the WHO?

Not only that, but straight-up pulled out of the organization so we no longer have a seat at the table. It was one of the most pointless self-owns of this administration.

Are they immune from criticism? Of course not. But a nation that accounts for 20% of the world's COVID-19 cases while only having 4% of the world's population to be casting blame on an org we pulled out of is the definition of throwing stones in glass houses.

This administration blaming the World Health Organization? Sure. No standing. Medical or public health community and anybody else who wants it to be better? Yeah I think we should. I have lots of friends in LMIC countries and their bad/delayed advice was very consequential.

I've been doing outreach to many countries that follow @WHO only, many in Latin America. They are extremely misinformed, lots of hygiene theater and disinfecting everything. Often not taken air seriously till they hear from me, they often seem shocked.

So I beg to differ, @WHO is effectively an "intellectual dictatorship" over the Health Ministries of many countries, especially those with less resources. And if @WHO is obtuse, then many people suffer. (The US is a different problem, agreed that @WHO plays a minor role here)
