This is amazing. December 2020. As late as this April, people—including Dr. Fauci—thought 18 months was probably too optimistic a timeline for vaccines. And we’d have been thrilled with ones much less efficacious than these. And multiple ones are in the pipeline. It is a triumph.https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1337582860908326912 …

I wrote about the Chinese scientist who kick-started it all by publishing the SARS-CoV-2 sequence in an open repository on January 10th—without waiting for authorization. Two days later, Moderna had the vaccine. Just ten months later, we have a vaccine. https://zeynep.substack.com/p/the-pandemic-heroes-who-gave-us-the …

He's def a hero. There are other heroes, too, though, like the NIH-funded scientists who really got the mRNA platform working a few years ago.

The vaccines were my idea actually. Yeah these companies made them but when the virus first started I said "there should be a vaccine so people dont get sick from this". And now there is. And I'm not getting any credit.

Is there a good month-by-month timeline on it, and then analyses of how to shorten it? The trials were, what, 5-6 months of this? How can we go from 11 months to 9 to 7, to even 3 if there was > 10% mortality? And for 25% mortality, what can you do in 30 days? Seriously.

I prefer a more traditional live attenuated or inactivated vaccine. Take longer to produce them since they are grown in an actual lab, so didn't appear first. Probably didn't fit into Trump's (election) timetable. Plus Trump's Moderna background czar nixed them.
