Yesterday, the FDA panel—no social science person on it—didn't separate out vaccine approval vote for 16-17-year-olds. Four members thus voted no to the whole thing but only because of the age inclusion. Already seeing questions & misinformation on the "no"s. Pointless own goal.

It was a pointless own-goal, but not so much due to lack of social science as to incompetent chairing. It's simple to ask " Is it ok to vote first on 18+ then on 16-17?" Probably ok with all, & would avoid ambiguous "no's".

I thought the point was that a social scientist would’ve been better at making the point that they needed to separate out the votes. even though it seems obvious, someone needed to make the point forcefully & deeply. anyway I think that’s valid.

The point is this is quite consequential, and anyone thinking about the trust side would have been forcefully insistent on clarifying the vote, plus this is standard survey research practice.

Yes, but I'm no social scientist or even very aware but as I listened I was going "WTF he's not dividing the question? Is he deaf? Does he want a bunch of noes?"

It seems to me like the failure here was not focusing on trust issues in handling the meeting process. I'm not sure having a social scientist present is either necessary or sufficient to fix that. (And I think you mean something more specific than "social scientist.")
