Yesterday, the FDA panel—no social science person on it—didn't separate out vaccine approval vote for 16-17-year-olds. Four members thus voted no to the whole thing but only because of the age inclusion. Already seeing questions & misinformation on the "no"s. Pointless own goal.

Worse, the people who voted no weren't given time right then to explain their votes—something that was done before. One even asked to separate the questions—vaccine authorization but not yet for 16-17—so he wouldn't have to vote no. Denied. Seems minor but let's not do this.

The idea that we're only facing medical issues is obviously not true, and it would really help matters if, at every level, there were more people whose focus is behavior, equity and trust. With all due respect—and I have a lot!—medical doctors can't fully fill this need.

As a medical doctor I agree with you. Most of us lack the social science background to understand how we build trust and equity with the public's health.

Also, again with all due respect, the training regimen and the culture really goes against it. I know many excellent and wise medical doctors, but the number of times I've seen MDs make unfounded assertions or behave in completely counterproductive ways without even realizing...

Every MD should spend a year working at a cafe or restaurant as a server or front of house. The amount of zero people skills with doctors is astonishing. But it’s the same in any hyperspecialized group (see: IT people, academics, scientists)

I'm part of a group that interviews future medical school students on my campus. Every conversation includes a version of 'Which course intellectually moved the needle the most for you?'. Humanities and Social Sciences are batting 1.000, or close to it.

These are students that love science. And when it comes time to being introspective and figuring out where they grew as a person and learned about their context in the world, it's in those disciplines where they often found that.

There is a whole specialized field that focuses on this, and it’s not doctors! It’s public health promotion/health behavior! And it includes health communication experts! I don’t know why the media isn’t talking to those kinds of experts

Couldn't agree with this more. It's totally bizarre. My only explanation is that it's easier to pick up the phone and talk to someone they already have experience with and trust. Even if that person is way out of their lane for the subject.

(Disclosure: I'm very much biased) If only there was a profession that had more of a focus in the social sciences, has consistently been considered the most trusted in the country, AND has doctorally-prepared members with policy/leadership expertise. *stares in nursing*

Should Biden have a "Chief Health Communicator" for COVID? Who will that be and will they have the right background (health commmunication, social science) and level of influence? This is a critical need. Maybe @JuliaLMarcus? You, @zeynep?
