One the second dose issue. If the first dose has 50% efficacy, doesn’t the case for it require majority of the population vaccinated in a compressed time period — exactly what we can’t do. @zeynep @michaelmina_lab

If first dose only has 50% vs 90% w 2. Then this wouldn’t work. But if it’s 85% vs 95%. Then different options are on the table.

Almost a month ago I asked the same question as Zeynep was now asking and immunologists told me that 2 was necessary because of the complexities of the immune system.https://joshuagans.substack.com/p/how-many-vaccine-doses-do-you-need …

Yes. I understand the complexities of the immune system around vaccines and infections. This is what my research focuses on (even if my more public appearance is around testing these days). The immune system is complex. I fully agree. This is something we should consider though

If we started immediately, we'd know fairly quickly, no? I mean at least as much as we know now. (Pfizer has only about three months of data).

I think if we tested people with the first dose and, also, varied the second dose time frame — from 4 weeks to 10 weeks for instance, maybe we can find out information quickly. Anyone getting an early dose should be up for this variation.

We should also begin testing for transmission immediately amongst those already vaccinated. Why we do not do this no is unreal. I think I’ll set up a study.

Also, will vaccinated test positive on PCR? This should be well known and easily delineated
