I don’t see the slightest risk or inability to recruit tbh. There is no mass resignation either. They will keep recruiting just fine for their purposes is my guess, although there might be a few who refuse. Also by “responded” you mean they published a heavily legaled Google doc?

I don't think they could care less and in any case, they'll just hire regular CS people as usual and some those people will say they are AI ethicists. If they had an actual inability to recruit top CS people, maybe they'd have a concern. Zero evidence of that. Actually, negative.

I think you’re both right. Zeynep is right that this scandal won’t damage Google measurably in terms of recruiting; Kevin’s right that Google takes internal dissent much more seriously than external outrage.

And you think there are AI engineers who are not going to work at Google because of such a concern? I see less than zero evidence in that we have years of evidence that it is not happening. Not at all. AI engineers are making a choice and working at Google (and FB).
