This is a really good question. I can't think of one. I'd say "me" but I'm no longer really a "prominent tech writer" -- more like former/sometimes tech writer. Anyone have names to suggest?https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1336698932357902336 …

Who are some prominent tech writers who have expressed skepticism that more robust moderation/deplatforming can really 'solve' the problems introduced by social media, or who have argued that it is likely to cause more harm than good?

Wait, who are the ones arguing that more robust moderation or deplatforming can “solve” the problem?

I’m asking the opposite. Who actually argues that merely more robust moderation and deplatforrming would “solve” the problems?

I don't think anyone argues that it will *solve* the problem. But I do think many, many writers argue that failure to moderate [pick a random anecdote] is proof that a company does nothing or doesn't care about societal problem x. And that implies moderation would somehow help.

Yes. The assumptions baked into “news” articles about company moderation decisions are steeped in the assumption that censorship is ipso facto good, and by extension don’t even acknowledge the possibility that preserving free expression is a driving consideration.

I'm going to say that the critics have been way, way beyond that kind of simplistic argument for a long time. For clarity, I doubt either of you are against any and all moderation?

I’m not making a point about simplistic arguments. I’m making observations about deep-rooted bias in prominent publication stories about moderation decision. The point is that arguments aren’t even being acknowledged.

I'm not a fan of all tech news and framing out there so can't do a blanket defense of that, but I think the "tech critic" space is one where I can pretty much do a blanket defense that the downsides are, well—we raised them!

I was supporting Mike’s point and didn’t intend anything broader than that.

But the implication--moderation would help--seems to be broadly shared? That's why I asked. Do either of you think that moderation does not help? (Which is Mike disputed: the idea that moderation would help).

I interpreted Mike’s comment to be that there are many who do indeed argue for more moderation than there is currently; my contribution was noting that these arguments are often made implicitly in news stories. That’s all :)

Got it! I think the tech companies themselves would like more moderation, and hence the huge effort to automate it (given its costs if done by humans). That said, I do think there is still lowish hanging fruit that's not done well (like breaking news).
