More here. What's going on isn't just some legal, if distasteful, wrangling. It's a blatant—and yes, incompetent and buffoonish—attempt to steal an election, and that effort is being supported and allowed by a party that is entrenching minority rule.https://twitter.com/ThePlumLineGS/status/1335973811255209987 …

All of that can be true, but not change the substance of the threat we're facing, especially with all the structural, minority-rule entrenchment.https://twitter.com/umanoid/status/1336026581278593025 …

He’s using the Coup to setup the next grift. 2024 election.5 replies 41 retweets 244 likesShow this thread -
Look, this is *today* and the Republican leadership is not standing up to defend an R governor while GOP election officials are begging for this to stop before "someone gets killed" & armed protesters are showing up at elected officials houses. This isn't just some norm-bending.pic.twitter.com/jbCkrEyAMe

I've just published a strong counterargument to my essay about the seriousness of Trump's attempts. Go read
@Pinboard's worthy rebuttal titled "This was the Most Ordinary of Elections." (Counters will be a regular feature of@insight, my own newsletter!) https://zeynep.substack.com/p/is-this-a-coup-introducing-the-counter …pic.twitter.com/PssI3SLH7n

Another counterargument to mine from
@dandrezner who highlights "the near-total absence of violence or mobilization toward violence" (well, kinda true enough... yet) and says Republicans are not lockstep (I think the elected ones are pretty lockstep!)https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/12/07/its-not-coup-its-not-even-bad-coup/ …9 replies 14 retweets 85 likesShow this thread -

Yeah, pretty lockstep at the electoral level—especially significant since the charges are farcical and not even a teeny-tiny bit plausible. It's beyond face-saving silence at this point.

Except it’s *not* lockstep at the electoral level. My point was that elected state officials have acted responsibly. Your evidence comes from congressional Republicans.

The elected leaders of the party, yes, the ones that rule the nation. They face the most farcical attempt, and they can't move. And yes, most notable exceptions are at the local level who are begging their leadership to no avail. But also not all state officials.pic.twitter.com/xfuGSgBAHc

National-level (or wannabe national level) GOP are pretty much lockstep, state-level are not. Different incentives. That's not great as the institutional conflict moves to federal level (see inaugural;TX SCOTUS suit). Still v. likely to fail but more fitting as "autogolpe"

Not to mention state officials are feeing heat from above and below. Will electoral incentives at the state level shift in favor of autogolpismo next time around? I bet at least one battleground State Secretary candidate will run on what they would have done in 2020...
