      Do like an epidemiologist! "epidemiologists are a very cautious group" (i.e. they're smart) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/world/we-asked-700-epidemiologists-what-it-would-take-for-their-lives-to-return-to-normal.html?searchResultPosition=1 … by @sangerkatz @clairecm @qdbui @UpshotNYTpic.twitter.com/X6NHDlq8Hx

I have a different interpretation. It's a profound failure of public health that ordinary people have to think like an epidemiologist, or, if they can't the implication is that they aren't "smart". They should have had actionable guidance and information, not need being "smart."

Agree, @zeynep But all did have actionable guidance with a substantial proportion rejecting it, in denial, preferentially following influencers promoting anti-science

I read the CDC guidelines for months and *this week* finally, (December!) I saw guidelines that I think make sense. Finally. The state/city rules have been confusing everywhere, too. Bars/restaurants open, schools and parks closed. How are people supposed to navigate this?

if your only goal is to avoid getting an infectious disease, absolutely. The problem is this new assumption that all of life should be lived attempting to avoid getting any infectious diseases, and being "smart" is trying to do whatever you can to make that happen.

I once again (fwiw) agree a billion percent with @zeynep . The epidemiologist/php/scientists/writers are great, BUT after agreeing a consensus the messaging answer can't be "read it in the times/Twitter/the Atlantic. " That's preaching to the choir. ..(1 of 2)

Actionable information to prevent disease, relevant to their living circumstances, translated into languages they understand and delivered by people they trust. This is public health.

I think Eric and zeynep can both be right here. Just remember, epidemiology is a social science - of the same school of thought as political science. Mile-wide, inch deep, and possibly susceptible to resisting the relinquishing of power once they have it?
