I mean ... that already happens all the time, and I feel I am still largely able to live a full and rich life.

I can’t think of the last time a business asked for my DL actually. And I live in the burbs. And it has no other information on it besides my birth, addresss, and whether I can operate a motor vehicle legally, and what kind.

The idea of vaccines being a job requirement is not theoretical. It's already imposed extensively on health care workers (and also on students) (and also as a condition for entry to foreign countries) and doesn't seem to have led to a dystopia.

And I think Michael's concern may be self-limiting. The airlines had to be nudged into banning smoking and most of them (not Delta) have gone back to 100% capacity. I actually don't think most airlines will impose a vaccine requirement if not required by the FDA.

The vaccine requirement won't be practical until well into next year when the vaccine is available to everyone who wants it; if prevalence is far down by then, I am not sure the market will actually support a requirement.

However, if there are a lot of refusers, and prevalence doesn't go down as much as we'd hope, things may get sticky.

It’s not going to be the market that asks for this, but hypochondriacs.

Sure but people who don't want to get the vaccine (or don't want to have to prove they got it) are in the market, too.

I think we’re overlooking a real danger here—that exaggerated and misframed media chatter about vaccine hesitancy may actually make things worse. There are multiple reasons to think we can avoid these hypotheticals with good policies including better framed media attention.

If the initial readouts hold up, and especially for the mRNA ones, we won't need any of this complicated enforcement mechanisms. Well, unless we screw it up by screaming about it in the worst possible way starting now, thus ensuring entrenchment & more opportunities for misinfo.

Meaning, the vaccines are expected to be so effective, that for individuals, choosing to become vaccinated truly addresses covid for themselves - they don't need to rely on herd immunity as well?
