Agree this is the most important non-fiction writing tip: if an editor/reader thinks something is unclear, the job is to rewrite it till it's clear. My second would be no phrase or sentence is too beautiful to change or abandon. There's always fiction or poetry for those folks!https://twitter.com/rogierK/status/1334077282189717506 …

So true. The smartest readers appreciate the clarity too. I write explanations for the LSAT exam, written to be understood by the least skilled students. But the most skilled love the explanations as a result. Reading aloud is an excellent way to find the unclear bits.

Make it "clear, concise, and compelling" was my advice to verbose writing students. The key is showing them how and seeing if they can learn from one or two edits.

In fiction they are still right, but maybe that was the point.

This is why I have so little patience with most French social science works (philosophy is the worst). Convoluted, hermetic, verbose: they seem to find joy in making the struggling reader feel inadequate and awed. Now that I have learnt how to write, I can't be bothered anymore.

(Mind you, I am not talking about academic papers meant for peers, which can understandably be beyond the grasp of laypeople. I was referring to the social sciences shelf of your typical bookshop)

This, after all, is what "kill your darlings" means. Not, destroy every line you love, but be willing to cut free the beautiful ballast if it's sinking your balloon.

It's true beyond writing. "Users keep misusing our product! We'll chalk it up to user error." "Uh, no. If users keep making the same error, and you don't improve the UI, that's on you, not them."
