There's been *so much* damage from media outlets rushing to publish definitive sounding articles with bold headlines from what are kinda-maybe-let's see articles or papers with issues that soon get interpreted better—and then all the sensationalist twitter accounts amplifying it.

It's been ten months. Just stop please. The bolder the claim, the more time, context and evaluation is necessary. People are quick to spot other kinds of misinformation problems *over there* but this one is widespread *over here* among people who believe they are not misinformed.

Why only journalist and
Tweeters? Sounds like generally sound advice. -
People rely on journalists/media to sort through the studies. The

Please, also: do not put out headlines, EVER, on studies that are based on p (significance) alone as “significant.” It usually doesn’t mean much at all. A better phrase would be “may have detected a relationship.” We need effect size and replication before it means anything.

Journalists and twitterati thrive on “breaking news” and “hot takes” respectively for both reputation and profit. Sedate established view doesn’t sell. We’re now spanning the full spectrum from “news fit to print” to tabloids. It seems this bias is deeply entrenched.

It’s unclear to me why reputable publications don’t have science editors who review and amend these stories to represent what is actually known - and unknown. And have input on the headlines. It’s shameful. And harmful.

This will never happen. It's not that they don't know not to do this, it's that they don't care.
