One of the things we do in infection prev/epi is community-based education. From the beginning, convos about the use of “airborne” were about the meaning & how we explain it in the context of a novel ID. This is why the @CDCgov has taken such care to discuss situational arbne. 1/

Yes. People are not acting as if they can catch CV from someone 10' away indoors. Business reopening plans follow hygiene and 6 foot guidance, then allow people to eat in common areas without masks. Folks wear masks to Target but not w/ friends. Message has been misunderstood.

Yeah, and it is December! I think this will be in future public health textbooks as one of the most consequential failures of communication, in contrast to countries like Japan and Hong Kong that have successfully communicated to their public. It was possible and we failed.

All the little plexiglass partitions built for indoor spaces suggests the same?

That’s a great point- mine was simply saying we know indoors is high risk and creating that outdoors is problematic, but I appreciate your point bc clearly we’re struggling in that area :)

I believe what has often been lacking in the communication/guidance, is the *why* Plenty of what - do this, not that - but without concise explanation as to the underlying mechanism Airborne, aerosol, floaters - call it whatever, but the message that hasn’t broken through 1/

While I agree that science communication has failed in this regard, "outdoor/indoor" restaurants are not being recommended by anyone. Saying a virus is "airborne" isn't a recommendation and it doesn't provide any actionable solutions.

CDC's mitigative guidance has certainly (100%) significantly evolved to now include actions that address farther-away (space/time) spread in the indoor environment, compared to what was originally was included in recommendations. Q2 v. Q4 = major (albeit somewhat subtle) pivot.
