I realize these restrictions were already eased but... I don't see how any locale can restrict religious service if it has indoor dining or bars open. If anything, the former can be done with masks. That said, it should be noted that singing/choir indoors is especially high-risk.https://twitter.com/stevenmazie/status/1331838731893043201 …

Tonight the Supreme Court's nine members—who are conducting oral arguments remotely from their homes—said New York may not impose a 10-person limit on attendance at houses of worship in COVID hotspots.

You've spent all year making extremely useful and clarifying arguments about basing regulations on actual risks. That's what NY State did in this case – and what SCOTUS undoes in a blatantly politicized ruling. Red zones do *not* allow indoor dining or gyms.

Activities other states allow or don't allow isn't determined by the government of this state. But in NYC all of the gatherings that seem (in my unexpert opinion) most similar to religious services have yet to return. No movies, theater, concerts, sports.

For many New Yorkers all those before-times cultural experiences probably are our real religion haha. But folks who worship in actual churches and mosques and synagogues etc have been allowed to do so as long as they don't exceed 50% capacity.

Europe did the 50% capacity too, and it greatly backfired. If you put 100 people inside a place designed for 200 people, and if they’re unmasked and singing, that will be quite unsafe.

It seems like a terrible idea to me, too! But I was responding to your tweets about the rules losing legitimacy because they allow gambling (or indoor dining) while banning worship, and that's just not the case with this particular set of rules.

Yeah. Indoor dining and bars have clearly been the highest risk and are not equal to worship for risk—unless it’s a choir. Ideally, those activities would have been restricted, with compensation for owners and employees, while providing specific guidelines for worship places.

Also as far as I know, there are zero movie theater cases from February or March. I think quietly sitting indoors, especially with high-grade masks, may well not be that risky. I would still advise anyone higher risk to avoid it but... It appears that talking/singing is the risk.

Agree! Movie theaters remaining closed has felt arbitrary (and it's just a bummer). I'd never argue NY's rules are ideal, even if I feel safer in the city than I would in lots of the US and Europe. But one thing they have clearly not done is unduly impact religious practice
