There is a bit of a double standard though. Journalists say “I can report everything you tell me any time I want, unless we have an explicit ex ante agreement otherwise”. And yet they also expect companies to keep information secret with no such agreement.

CB can’t say “well, tell us what you’re going to say and when you’re going to say it, and we’ll prepare a blog post to go up 1 minute later in response.” NYT would never agree to such a deal.

Also, what’s the downside for CB? What’s the sanction? Shorter heads up time?

It’s not tit-for-tat. But all companies including Coinbase work hard on building good relations with the press, for myriad reasons. This action damages those relations.

Yeah I think this theory is pretty bizarre. Unless there's an explicit agreement to the contrary I think the subject of a story has every right in the world to preemptively react to the story.

Yes. If anything, I think the journalists have an ethical duty to remain above the tit-for-tat despite any preemptive response. Journalism is the one with a claim to a public service (which I believe in and support). The company has no corresponding claim or obligation.

CB doesn’t claim public service? https://blog.coinbase.com/culture-at-coinbase-fe510fe9c098 …pic.twitter.com/7pdvpkpnmw

They seem to be claiming creating more “economic freedom”. Journalism’s claims are directly related to reporting and informing the public which is the topic at hand. (So, Coinbase shouldn’t be concentrating wealth, I guess, whatever they feel about a competitor.)

I actually think higher of journalism in this particular case, hence the higher expectation. I’ve never go around thinking about how to keep Coinbase going but I worry about decline of local news, journalist freedoms etc.

Is this talk of "good will" relevant when CB execs think NYT is about to run an unfair hit piece? Wasn't the "good will" sacrificed by NYT at the point the angle of their story became clear?
