The president spent last month telling people the election was rigged, the votes fraudulent, the count manipulated. The damage is real and we need better safeguards than just repeating there was no evidence of fraud. I wrote about basic & possible reforms. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/24/opinion/election-integrity.html …pic.twitter.com/d8BZibQjNy

It may not be fashionable to say this right now, but many Democrats also distrust the electoral process. They distrust the voting machines—with reason. And optical-scan machines can malfunction. We need risk-limiting audits. And automatic voter registration. Georgia has both now.pic.twitter.com/1EaTv9JKXe

Yes, fixing voter-registration and counting is not the whole story, by far, but that doesn't make it unnecessary or less urgent. Right now, Trump's base is awash in conspiracy theories about voting machines. You know what? I don't have an answer to them and neither does anyone.

Yes. Surrendering to we'll never convince "them" is not the right answer. The deliberate pumping of mistrust thrives on weak process. And I've been writing about electoral mistrust/process for many elections, and the mistrust really is across party lines. https://twitter.com/libraryluna/status/1331249067981201416 …

Adding, many Dem's in 2016 thought the election was not rigged, but that Trump cheated it, by violations of campaign finance law (true, Indidvidual 1 is an unindicted co-conspirator), foreign influence (true 27 indicted RU operatives), and potential dark foreign money via NRA.

Did you see the CNN report on dark money and shadow candidates in FL? Sure democrats have concerns, because of all the state level shenanigans. Question, since the Feds don't provide any money to states, and states do what they want - how do we fix it nationally?

I think the one positive to come out of this is that Republicans need to believe their own vote is threatened by lack of existing protections in order to pass meaningful reform. Otherwise they will continue enacting 21st Century Jim Crow laws.

Is it fair to lump gerrymandering and enfranchisement into this discussion? I think if you do, there is *no one* that believes the status quo is acceptable.

The problem is deeper that "weak process." Voting is a precondition for democracy. It's not the thing itself. Dem requires everyday citizens who want to hear and understand each other so they can think together. Our culture is too weak to embed this broadscale.

Why don't most people want to say the obvious? We can't solve these problems without a well-functioning primary education system teaching critical thinking skills. https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2019/05/europe/finland-fake-news-intl/ …
