The Kansas natural experiment is among the best I've seen. Look at what was happening before the mandate: really adds to plausibility it's not just confounding.
I don’t think any ecological study is enough. As I said I did not read the MMWR but knew original study/data which actually works against mask efficacy as a setup.

Another point is that for an approach like ecological data which we know is inherently fraught, confirmation bias is huge, because one can always explain away the data that disagrees with our viewpoint. Thus both pro- and anti-maskers think the ecological data is on their side.
