There have been some HIV/AIDS crisis lessons that have been misapplied to COVID, but I think those engaging in the over the top scolding and shaming in response to this article should consider that history and whether it’s likely to be effective or just make people tune you out. https://twitter.com/fmanjoo/status/1329781116169973766 …

People are making balancing choices every day in this difficult and *long* situation, including some Farhad describes in this story. People who reach conclusions you think are unwise are not monsters and you might consider a little empathy when trying to persuade.

It is also worth thinking back to the protests of June. There was emphasis on the mitigating measures (many) protesters took. One could disagree about whether they were good enough. There was an acknowledgment people would look for ways to do things that are important to them.

I spent last year writing many many articles against the scolding and shaming, and urging understanding for trade-offs people make. This is an article that concludes "well, if you love your family it's worth it"—basically shaming anyone not taking the risk. It's appalling.

I take the last sentence only to mean that he considers this to be the right choice for himself and his family.

There's a way to write a column on this or like this without putting "my family is worth it" as the conclusion. It's not summer. Thanksgiving travel will potentially tip this country into a disaster. This is the NYT! Where are the editors? It's the second time he did this, too.

I'm frustrated. I'd have no problem with a column that said look, sometimes, we all take the risks because we're human and there is no good answer. Don't scold people! I'm for that message! Not pages of risk calculation followed by love conquers all, minor fall, major lift...

I love my family, but I’ve done time in an ICU. The people were awesome, but I would only wish that experience on my worst enemy.
