I have to get outside this weekend or I will die. I’ve never hiked in the cold. If you have some good clothing or gear recommendations, I’m taking them.

So I'm the woman shivering when everyone is wearing shorts. I'm the one in the 5mm full body wetsuit when others are in bikinis. I tried everything. The only thing that works well for me is merino wool layers for hiking/outdoor things. Expensive but works. A few basics is enough.

Layers are your friend. Buy a good merino wool layer to wear under whatever else you are wearing, and if you are like me, it works. Plus most of them can be worn on their own, too, if it feels hot. I'd say my 2 cents but man THEY ARE EXPENSIVE.pic.twitter.com/30LLfjMGxn

You know how people who grow up poor but are not now describe the moment when they realize they are not poor anymore? For me, it was realizing that I could afford the warmth! 😀(I tried many cheaper alternatives over the years I was poor. Well, shivered through them, more like).

I second this as a Mediterrenean native living in Sweden. Thermal layers make all the difference. Suddenly you feel free and "richly warm" if i may allude to Zeynep's comments.

YES. Sometimes I think about how much warmer I am living in Colorado than I was living in Philly and it's 100% about income. If I need new warm socks, or gaiters, or whatever, I just buy them.

The first real wool sweater feels like such an astounding luxury when you've always been bundled in cotton waffle-knit thermals and acrylic sweaters.

Costco occasionally sells washable merino wool tops as well as wool socks for a very reasonable price. Sierra[dot]com also has a good selection of Smartwool, Icebreakers, and silk thermals at greatly discounted prices.

^^^ Costco has been a place I’ve found quality reasonably-priced cold weather clothing. But also I live in MN.

All of this. Being able to afford some merino wool base layers — I hike five days a week year-round — has meant the world to me. I tried Woolx recently — expensive, extremely warm

Pretty much it was being able to buy any piece of clothing more than a T-shirt, and not agonize over it.
