Main Point: We knew so much about this virus before we even discovered it!
Yet we chose to ignore what we knew, and instead started over, rewriting the textbook and losing valuable ground.
I wrote on this recently too

Am I wrong in thinking the textbook was written for a virus without pre/asymptomatic transmission, and that made all the difference? Frequent testing, masks, judicious use of lockdowns, aren't they all responses to "anybody could be a silent carrier"?

Flu—the one that most Western playbooks rely on—has presymptomatic transmission though not superspreading (though SARS in 2003 had superspreading but not presymptomatic transmission).
