If you ever needed proof that false sense of security— asserted again without evidence in this New York Times piece—is often nonsense just look at Hong Kong, possibly the last example anyone should pick as failure to respond to the virus but somehow is what NYT picks? Come on.https://twitter.com/hurtingbombz/status/1329345796353916930 …

In bare-faced cheek news, the New York Times today carries this savaging of Hong Kong’s protocols. Remind me again which of the two countries has gone feral? But watch out because nobody does remote work... pic.twitter.com/LAdAPCXISr

I have sympathy for the message that deep-cleaning is less necessary but COME ON what is this nonsense? Hong Kong's scientists talked about ventilation/airborne transmission all along and universal masking was citizen-led since January. People aren't stupid, thank you very much.pic.twitter.com/kUG0J7dpTY

Yeah, seriously infuriating, the idea that, of all places, Hong Kong is in the thralls of some "false sense of security" because they are also into disinfection of surfaces. If anything they prove the opposite. By the way, schools in Hong Kong are open. https://twitter.com/JoyceLauNews/status/1329386297039876096 …

Yep. Hong Kong does so much to guard against airborne transmission and, personally, whose top-notch scientists were the first ones I learned from and whose citizens took initiative from day one.. Wow, they can keep two thoughts in their head. Imagine that.https://twitter.com/KatherineFlorey/status/1329508283237896192 …

It's almost as if you can accept that airborne transmission is most important but also account for the small probability that some surface transmission occurs!

Fine. Pick another example and don't claim a false sense of security when none is demonstrated. Few places are more aware of and guarded against airborne transmission than Hong Kong partly because they had some of the most striking examples during SARS.https://twitter.com/mugsymugsy18/status/1329508616336928769 …

@zeynep Isn't the article by @apoorva_nyc supporting the view of focusing on things that work like ventilation rather than hygiene theater? https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/18/world/asia/covid-cleaning.html …

Yeah, really, why do we need to go falsely pick on a country that doesn't demonstrate the problem when, you know? Us? New York schools are already closed again (Hong Kong is open!) and even when they were open, they kept closing to "deep clean" the school.https://twitter.com/saikit/status/1329510780006494208 …

Yeah, we have a terrible failure exactly on this issue in almost the whole Western world so let's pick the one place where ordinary people debate what to do about aerosol plumes in toilets to assert false sense of security against airborne transmission.🙄https://twitter.com/james_e_baldwin/status/1329513609374928896 …

This is the same BS whenever someone publishes a study showing the self evident hypothesis that masks work; people, many of them popular epidemiologists here, lose their minds and shriek about “but what about social distancing??? focus on masks will make people lazy!!!”
