I spotted Zeynep stating that it is probably sensible to take vitamin D to prevent deficiency, but just don't expect miracles. But we haven't been claiming miracles - just very relevant harm reduction through cheap, easy and harmless measures.

Thank you for this - but know that during autumn/winter months, the sun provides extremely minimal vitamin D. This is why Gordon, I and others are hoping to prevent people from being deficient right now, which is unarguably a bad thing to be. Sunlight won't cut it this winter.

The data does not look good in terms of sufficient winter Vitamin D levels here in Ireland where winter sun is rare. This winter I'm taking a Pharmacist recommended Vitamin D supplement. https://tilda.tcd.ie/publications/reports/pdf/Report_Covid19VitaminD.pdf …

"a walk outdoors is a much better recommendation than supplementation." Not now. Most people in the north hemisphere will not get vitamin D from sun for months. Rough guide: UV index > 3 needed. And most people get too little from food.pic.twitter.com/XDoPba7MVe

And, for example, D supplementation may not be advised for certain individuals prone to kidney stones.
