    1. C-19 & Vitamin D‏ @c19d3k2 14 Nov 2020

      C-19 & Vitamin D Retweeted Ljubomir Josifovski

One day, we’ll figure out what made people look the other way when it comes to Vitamin D (too-good/-simple to be true? “Pauli effect”?). Til then, it’s not at all unlikely that thousands will have suffered needlessly ... and you can’t imagine how sad @zeynep’s reaction makes me.https://twitter.com/ljupc0/status/1327625284594638850 …

Huh?? The page lists evidence for, and evidence against. It is such a rarity, in research: to tally the evidence *against* a hypothesis. Usually no effort goes towards that. Quacks and bullshitters don't work like that. I read & like what you write, you are off here.

You need to understand scale. For people who are actually deficient, more sun exposure or careful, minimal supplementation can be recommended without pretending the evidence for any big effect for *supplementation* is there. It's not. It would be easy to show otherwise.

What do you make of the French study that showed an effect of supplementation (I believe the sample was about 100 elderly patients)

“Minimal supplementation” won’t cut it in the acute phase. The usual supplement form (cholecalciferol) is often given in baby doses _and_ takes a long while (~1 week, ask @__ice9) to be metabolized. The Córdoba team used calcifediol for a good reason.

Interestingly, we see that using massive doses of cholecalciferol does seem to help. My guess: it's probably partly compensating for the conversion delay to calcifediol. https://twitter.com/gshotwell/status/1327314544344043523?s=19 …

A relatively recent, and good post on what we know about Vitamin D and Covid-19: https://coronavirus.medium.com/vitamin-d-and-covid-19-90f1d1493cc0 … (making a similar deficiency vs. supplemental point)

I respect both of you. As a nurse, I know we undertest for Serum 25OH. Most clients are in low to deficient ranges. Some <10 ng/ml w/most in low 20s. Widespread deficiency prevalent esp. in Northern climates. So cheap/easy to supplement 2-4k iu D3/day. Decrease severity of Covid.

Worth educating about scale: I’m finally reading Gleick’s misnamed “Chaos” after 30 years, and it’s much more about scale (not to mention sociology of science).
