Shrunk to razor thin margin in Congress (history says likely to lose in 2022), maaaybe Senate (tough) but after that map says little chance for a long time, lost almost all big redistricting battles for next decade. Incumbent not conceding, his triumphant party backs him. So yep.https://twitter.com/TheStalwart/status/1326534494971699200 …

Democrats won the The White House, the Congress, and have a shot of flipping the Senate. Disastrous night. https://twitter.com/guypbenson/status/1326533823853719552 …

Also, noting the distortions of the electoral college/winner-takes-all model is fine but also please notice that if just about *0.2 percent* of the voters in a few states had voted differently, Trump would have won re-election. Now even fewer chances to fix those distortions.

Fine. This was answer to people saying why are Dems concerned? If they can read reality, they should be very concerned. Look at the House—the Dem margin may be a few as ~six. Look at the state legislators—real loss, which feeds gerrymandering. Courts, too.https://twitter.com/elkmovie/status/1326549975006806020 …

Of course, not. I just don't find self-soothing or magical thinking to be a good basis for optimism. https://twitter.com/nijusar/status/1326558612886614016 …

Agreed. I too would like some hints about what we, ordinary citizens, could do. Running for office seems to be one idea floating around, but that might not be for everybody.

Some of us would like to breathe a little. I am a very privileged migrant, and I was terrified of having my citizenship application denied, and then my green card revoked/not renewed.

Honest question - you talk about the negative behavioral influence of polls + modeling, but have you looked at the influence of qualitative predictions and messaging?

To be clear, I agree with your analyses! But if we worry about human ability to consume poll data, I think it makes sense to also be worried about how we might process demands to never celebrate our victories and focus on our (very real!) losses.

And if trump won? Not sure how you reconcile the alternative? Winning the WH is a BFD and it strikes me as magical thinking that Republicans would be washed away in one election.

The House results are unfortunate, but almost all are in purple districts that Dems flipped in 2018. The Dem leadership needs to find if that was because Trump ran, or there was a problem with the messaging. Depending on how Biden governs, 2022 could be just fine.
