This is a really terrific piece, as usual, from @zeynep.
I’d recommend sending it to anyone you know who’s rabidly anti-mask, because it’s so eminently reasonable.
It’s pro-mask, explains why, and doesn’t overstate evidence.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/06/opinion/sunday/coronavirus-masks.html …

At some point, contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism leads to you just as astray any other kind of groupthink.
-
"I have no idea where the truth is, so I'll assume it's in the middle" is just craven compatibilism. There is no respectable case for masks.

Gato, I think Zeynep is staking out the most reasonable position in the world on this. She says there’s some evidence masks help to some degree. She opposes pandemic theater. I don’t think she’s advocating violent enforcement of masks. She’s encouraging their use.

Zeynep, do you have more insight into the data and methods from the Kansas study? As far as I can see it's not published, or peer-reviewed, and postulates really quite a high outlier of expected effect. I mean a "50% reduction in cases as a lower bound." A game changer.
