It is ridiculous western wishful thinking and orientalism to think it was just social cohesion because they’re “Confucian”. They had the science right and their institutions worked. Ours didn’t. And their people responded to the advice of scientists in functional institutions.

Also by the way there are many ways in which we failed spectacularly, but Europe is not doing great either. In someways, worse. And there are a lot of non-Asian countries that are doing well. The western malaise is broad, and isn’t limited to the outgoing (!) administration.

So many ways in which it's not correct, not least the Huntingdon-esque 'confucian societies' bullshit, and the complete exlcusion of African nations which have done just as well as Asian ones without any of the resources and very different social conditions.

Yes. It's insulting to always see western people react to Asian success with "it's because they're a bunch of obedient robots with a beehive mind". Can orientalism die already? (Also Japan didn't take half of the measures South Korea did, shouldn't even be in the same group)

or it could be immunity? zeynep look at tokyo seroprevalence studies? well over 50%. this is a 60nm virus. it spreads, like viruses do. why is asia uniformly so good and the rest of world uniformly so bad? is every asian country the same? of course not. not so lurking variable.
-
Why would another unknown virus that causes cross-immunity be spread across Asia but not the rest of the world?
