OK. In which case I’d like to say that it’s not qualitatively different than a lot of these feels that you think of as “hard” expertise. They too have trade-offs which belong to the public, and not the experts.

We're in full agreement on "its politics all the way down" -- including for aviation & physics! The question for me comes prior to the point about authority and trade-offs: how reliable are our predictions about these things in the first place?

737 Max is actually a really interesting case (I know a lot about it; will eventually write) and I think it's one of the strongest examples for what I'm saying but can't fit it into tweets. :-D Pilots are rightly mad, but different issue there.
