.@zeynep is right WHO and other big institutions took too long to get on board with masks. Frankly, it took them decades to get on board with treating HIV and multi-drug resistant TB too. That is to say, we need them, but we need outside pressure always to press them harder. 1/

100%. The goal in AIDS wasn't to bring down WHO but to get them to do their damn job after ignoring the AIDS epidemic for 20+ years. After some circling wagons, with new leadership, they changed their tune, but after many years.

Interesting thing: in ancient times 80s, 90s, when NIH was being attacked by AIDS activists and scientists were furious with us, Fauci opened the doors. Not just him, but he realized that the activists were allies, he "uncircled" the wagons. Brought us in.

I know there are lots of criticisms of him; and I don't know him like you guys do but... This round, he has been willing to say "we were wrong" about key things more than almost anyone else I've seen (who tend to just ignore the question).
