A very interesting read on epistemic trespassing, experts moving into other areas assuming they know because they are smart. Sharp observations and thought-provoking. And recognizablehttps://www.forbes.com/sites/madhukarpai/2020/10/30/pandemic-or-not-experts-need-to-be-self-aware-and-humble/ …

Ironically, quoting a medical expert who has claimed, baselessly and relentlessly, that mask wearing would induce a false sense of confidence in the public, and was very late to responding to other evidence as well, and has long been cited by the anti-mask crowd because of that.

I *do* agree with the dangers of epistemic trespassing but trust the experts isn't working either. WHO still has not updated public-facing guidelines on ventilation (and has errors in it) and its mask guidance is full of errors they have refused to correct. CDC was pushed. Etc.

I think this problem likely persists within the WHO as well. Assuming WHO is “expert” on niche areas like viral transmission, aerosols, virus kinetics, etc probably isn’t right. My guess is there are “trespassers” within WHO and is part of what is causing some of the WHO deficits

Not to create confusion... but WHO is a very large org like CCD and messages can get muddled even within the organization by many voices. WHO DOES have the experts in each area. But if it is like the rest of the world, there are prob many people weighing in

Having dealt with these committees, the problem is not enough trespassing, and too much "trust us, we're the experts" arrogance from people who do not deliver. Look at the article: unreflectively citing *the* person who's been absolutely wrong or slow on key issues to great harm.

Trust the experts works if the experts deliver. The kind of interdisciplinary work you envision: folks in viral transmission, aerosols, virus kinetics, social science cooperating requires epistemic humility, not circling the wagons without delivering.

What I like about the article is it acknowledges that everyone is an epistemic trespasser. An epidemiologist who is not an education expert, for example, is still trespassing in terms of discussing school closures.
