A very interesting read on epistemic trespassing, experts moving into other areas assuming they know because they are smart. Sharp observations and thought-provoking. And recognizablehttps://www.forbes.com/sites/madhukarpai/2020/10/30/pandemic-or-not-experts-need-to-be-self-aware-and-humble/ …

I *do* agree with the dangers of epistemic trespassing but trust the experts isn't working either. WHO still has not updated public-facing guidelines on ventilation (and has errors in it) and its mask guidance is full of errors they have refused to correct. CDC was pushed. Etc.

I think this problem likely persists within the WHO as well. Assuming WHO is “expert” on niche areas like viral transmission, aerosols, virus kinetics, etc probably isn’t right. My guess is there are “trespassers” within WHO and is part of what is causing some of the WHO deficits

The big issue is surely the number of medical doctors, often without expertise in epidemiology, dabbling in statistics, exponentials, forecasting in general, as well as Public Health... If it wasn't for the "trespassers", we would be far worse off; viz, aerosolisation debate.

That is something that
@MarionKoopmans also claims. She is one of the people responsible for the lack of an adequate response in The Netherlands, and is part of a team for which epistemic trespassing is the normal routine. -
And as a consequence medical personnel in certain areas of NL still do not feel they should always wear a mask and stick to face shields.https://twitter.com/AmsterdamNL/status/1318992678999236621 …

If properly geared up with well-fitting P100 mask, non-vented googles, and gloves, you would have good reason to feel confident in just about any non-medical situation Covid situation. Start from there and match Covid exposure to kit required.
