Given what expert epidemiologists in the West were saying about masks (and about the supposed danger of surfaces) well into the pandemic, experts vs. misinformation has not been anywhere near as big a problem as misinformation from experts.

I disagree. If the scientists NOT THE SOCIAL SCIENTISTS were doing the talking the information would be expressed properly. Instead, the real scientists have to compete for attention with the SOCIAL SCIENTISTS proffering everything from let's variolate to there's no problem.

Lots and lots of scientists, not social scientists, were saying that masks were ineffective and potentially harmful.

But the language scientists would be using would be way more qualified if the scientists were doing all the talking. WIth unqualified social scientists making definitive statements, the real scientists counter w/same instead of language that real scientists would use.

I really don't see how that explains the mask debacle. There wasn't even much public discourse around masks (I know, because I and @zeynep) were some of the only people on here talking about their potential usefulness. But scientists unequivocally said they were useless.

Well, I'm just a dumb 50y/o guy in NJ w/an MBA & CFA and I don't ever recall the masks are unequivocally useless position lasting anything more than 12-24hrs. But what do i know.

Can you provide the actual dates (ie, period) when the masks are unequivocally useless narrative was universally believed? I'd like to research that. I have zero recollection of a time when there was consensus in the scientific community that masks were useless.

You are falling prey to your own availability heuristic. Perhaps among the circles you traveled and scientists w/whom you spoke that belief prevailed but was it really as universal among virologists and immunologists as you suggest?

YES IT WAS. Sorry, I really don't know how to convey this more to you but it really was.

Best way to do it is to give me the dates when this was universally the belief. There was obviously a period where this narrative was universally accepted and a moment when that period ended. Beginning and end dates would be great. Thanks

February, March, started changing in April in the West (took the WHO until June still not totally there.)
