My understanding is that this is how the concept of 3Cs came so early in the pandemic in Japan, even before all the “IS IT AIRBORNE” began here in the US. They saw patterns in environments where clusters were occurring thanks to contact tracers. (1/3)https://twitter.com/nataliexdean/status/1315315349902958592 …

Examples: - Where is transmission occurring? - Are people having trouble accessing testing? - Do people have a safe place to isolate? - Are people afraid to disclose certain types of contacts? - Are people unwilling to quarantine for fear of lost wages? 2/3

Japanese government documents say exactly that. The government gives the impression of having wanted to export their understanding and know-how, but to very little avail, apparently, at least in the West. https://www.mhlw.go.jp/content/10900000/000639224.pdf …pic.twitter.com/x08VllvDra

If we're talking about backward CT/cluster-focused CT in the West today, it's because of people like @kakape, @c_drosten (see his early August "A plan for the Fall"), and now you, having given us what seems like a huge booster shot with your articlehttps://twitter.com/kakape/status/1267884102092455940 …

Well, one interesting consequence that Hitoshi Oshitani pointed out to me is that contact tracing should concentrate more on tracing backwards rather than forwards since most people don‘t spread to anyone else but they are likely to have been infected at a superspreading event.

I think this whole story is a textbook case of some of @nntaleb's points about our epistemic culture: - "Lecturing birds how to fly": it seems the West abandoned comprehensive, bidirectional CT following the first wave (which overwhelmed CT), on the advice of theoretical papers
