Yep. Wikipedia is a genuine huge barrier to women in public—most people’s first impression of someone is a Wikipedia page. Women are edited harshly, not contributed to, overlooked or deleted. You can help out by editing, adding and pushing back as much as possible.https://twitter.com/jmissig/status/1317602431610441730 …

A well-published tenured professor who taught me had her wikipedia page removed for not being notable. I contested it and my request was denied. Then Wikipedia held some sort of “make pages for notable women scientists!” day. I brought that page back up and was denied again.

Yep. Wikipedia operates as a barrier to women in the world. The least worst version is women’s pages that undersell their true accomplishments. Worst version is erasure.https://twitter.com/mkramer/status/1317605468928413699 …

It also becomes problematic because the Wikipedia data layer powers a lot of the open internet. There’s tons of bias built in.

Mine was barebones until recently and despite some improvements, still has maybe 10-20% of my more notable work.https://twitter.com/ubiquity75/status/1317610204972814336 …

It took a village (of twitter folks) to get my page up and to keep it up, for which I am grateful.

This is serious for the public, educators & journalists. @jimmy_wales & @Wikipedia should create a more transparent editorial process and subject it to review by non-tech domain experts. It’s now an Amazon-like unregulated encyclopedia monopoly.

The second you posted your first tweet, I went to see if you had a page and breathed a sigh of relief to see one. Although it doesn’t give you enough credit for being one of the few people who has been right about everything that mattered during the pandemic.

@krmaher is not one to ignore the issue of gender bias on Wikipedia, which certainly is not to say it isn’t an issue.

I was born pessimistic, and I've only become more pessimistic. Anybody who isn't a straight, white, Christian, male, is going to be fighting an uphill battle forever. It would be nice to go through life not thinking about these things, but so it goes.

Mine sucked, and still sucks, too, but years ago, when someone flagged it for irrelevance, it was not deleted, even though much more relevant female scholars didn't have page yet.

We remember there was a highly publicized ArbCom dispute a few years back, where the main issue was misogyny. The outcome of it was bad. It's particularly frustrating because the open knowledge movement is so important!

Like, the ideals of the Wikimedia Foundation are really solid and the world needs that. In practice though, as a concrete organization, they fail to grapple with systemic misogyny and it very much biases what knowledge they actually make open.
