He's not saying his email was hacked. Someone impersonated him and lured a COVID researcher into revealing his credentials, and then hacked that person's email (and leveraged that to get access to a bunch of other stuff).

Easier said than done for some — many universities don’t yet support 2FA *ahem my university*. And tough because some systems require you to use university accounts/domains.

I can hear my company's infosec *screaming* into the void on this one. Our units should be using Teams and communicating within the app more to reduce attack surface for external spearphish.

using SMS (Text messages) as a form of MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is actually MUCH worse than skipping MFA. SMS creates many more security holes than it fixes.
