I'm reminded today of my 2018 piece on free speech in the age of digital technology. It's long, but has one key argument: we have to think about the reasons for free speech, and work from there. (Current kerfuffle is too complex for tweet-length response!) https://www.wired.com/story/free-speech-issue-tech-turmoil-new-censorship/ …pic.twitter.com/hE08q8AnIn

This is how scientific thought works but only after training; most folks innately believe what they hear or have been told if it doesn’t conflict with existing beliefs and particularly in cases where it supports those beliefs. Our educational system reinforces this notion.

Since we are still living this, I think it's very hard to see a way out of it. My guess is that the U.S. won't be the country or force that provides a solution or solutions to this problem. We're too free speech, individual freedom, and laissez faire see a problem here.

“... an essential point: The purpose of free speech is to further democratic participation”. Sorry, but once you relegate freedom of expression to a mere instrument to achieve some other end, you are lost. Whether absolute or qualified right, it should still be valued for itself.

We also need to think about the reason for computers. Computers are tools that help people think. People do not seek out disinformation nor do they want to be misinformed. If you've designed a computer system that contributes to disinformation, you've failed to serve your users.

We wouldn't want people to read inaccurate or misleading things on social media like your tweets about Cambridge Analytica.
