When @jburnmurdoch said this was "probably the best article on Covid I've read," I had to read it immediately. It's really good, as everything from @zeynep seems to be.https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/09/k-overlooked-variable-driving-pandemic/616548/ …

Why did South Korea and Japan notice this overdispersion so early? Why were we so slow to catch on? It’s not like we are short on researchers

My sense from speaking to their scientists/reading their papers is they started ahead (SARS/MERS approach, rather than flu, set them on the right path—clearly more appropriate for a related coronavirus) and, crucially, the ones in charge were more sensitive to emerging evidence.

For all the criticisms directed at him, and I have a few, when presented with the direct evidence, Dr. Fauci was quick to recognize what was wrong with the "it's not airborne" arguments (there is a fundamental error of physics in the WHO/CDC documents) and said so as much.

In contrast, it took about months to get most experts here to stop making almost completely implausible or evidence-free and/or incoherent claims about downsides/risks of wearing masks... Dunno what we lost, but here we are.

Japan focused on super spreaders because it was unable/unwilling to increase testing capacity, so had no choice. Japan is relatively stable now but is testing close to 10x what it was back when it was supposedly beating COVID with smarts. It is still not aggressive, so stable means 500/day with 50% from unknown routes vs SK with < 100/day and < 10% unknown...
