Are you aware of any studies on aeresol control from masks for situations which don't involve coughing? It seems an ideal study would be: someone talks for (e.g.) 30 minutes in a room with or without a mask and we measure the virus in aerosol in the room.

We're doing this in the lab, simulating size and velocity of aerosols generated during speaking continuously for 30 sec.

Do you not use people with infections in your research because of ethical/safety concerns? Seems like the best way to find out if masks work in the real world is the experiment @WesPegden outlined.

Here's an example of a paper using real people/viruses. But the study was for symptomatic individuals. I think the (seasonal) coronavirus cases coughed an average of 17 times into the detector over 30 minutes, if I remember right. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32371934/

The problem is that there may be great variation in aerosol emission. Or not. Since we don't know which people are which, it makes it hard to do minimal guidelines from a few lab studies for maximum safety. There are a few events where the attack-rate is just wild.

Your question is how common are the wild attack rates in enclosed environments? Our best bet is epi, there, and we have enough examples though unclear denominator since, hopefully, more of the world is avoiding large indoor events atm.

I am very curious about the denominator. In much of Europe university lectures, etc., are happening with distance but no masks. In much of Europe schools are also not using masks. Here are two questions I think we don't know the answer to: 1/2
