My current saga. My landlord wants me to sign a new lease that gives me only two hours notice to show the house to potential buyers, upon which I am supposed to vacate the house—and if I don't do that three times, he can evict me. Two hours notice. In the middle of a pandemic.

Seriously, I should be working on another piece trying to explain some other aspect of the pandemic, teach and mentor my students, take care of my own stuff... It's been like this for months, and I made many reasonable offers, going out of my way. Nope, nope.

So
#NCPol question. Anyone in North Carolina regulatory offices want to chat about landlords forcing unsafe showings on tenants? I’ve learned that other states have actual guidelines on this. I’d love to be a test case! Some good out of all this stupidity. https://twitter.com/lenert/status/1313226431724285952 …This Tweet is unavailable.Show this thread

Does your lease allow for increases and showings?

Is your current lease month-to-month? If not, when does it terminate?

What happened to laws that they have to give 48 hrs notice to enter?

You have a valid lease. The threat of going to court is the card they use to try to intimidate people, just like the threat of the fight ahead is what they use to scare folks into giving in or just moving out to avoid the hassle. Leave in your own terms when you can.

Leases protect both the landlord and the tenant. But a lessee has no right to continue to occupy the property once the lease expires. They do not have the right to continue to occupy the premises under the terms of an expired lease, beyond what the landlord agrees to allow.

IAAL. This is one of those times when you need to close Twitter and listen to your own lawyer to solve it. You aren't helping yourself by splashing this out there. I love your work and enjoy following you; this isn't the same stuff.
