No masks indoors but on playgrounds?😱 Failure all around. CDC still hasn't posted guidelines for airborne transmission. WHO's advice to the public still doesn't *mention* ventilation or how 3 feet isn't enough indoors or say masks on at all times indoors. https://twitter.com/reneritchie/status/1313103214963838978 …

This is WHO's page for the public. It has many paragraphs on the use of hand-sanitizers but doesn't say *even once* that ventilation is important or outdoors is safer than indoors. WHO guidelines maintain the fiction that mere three feet is enough indoors. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public …pic.twitter.com/gBkU5Ihva7

We need to be able to trust the CDC and the WHO to lead, to give us the best of research and public health guidelines. It's October 2020. I know there are people in both organizations who spent their lives for public health. But please. If not now, when? This is catastrophic.

I WANT TO support the WHO. But this is their *current* mask guidelines. It says that community health workers doing screenings, or the public being screened, do not need to wear masks AT ALL if one meter apart (a mere three feet)—even if indoors. https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/advice-on-the-use-of-masks-in-the-community-during-home-care-and-in-healthcare-settings-in-the-context-of-the-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)-outbreak …pic.twitter.com/sbLRklR7qh

I normally want to hear out both sides, so @epireport @SaskiaPopescu do you guys agree with this? It seems crazy to me. Obviously WHO does good work but what's at issue here is specifically aerosols and more specifically the need for masks at 3 feet of distance!

So the guidance actually continues - reiterating the usage of precautions during care of suspected or confirmed cases. It’s in the doc @zeynep included, but just after the page break. (See bottom left)pic.twitter.com/DfX8Uv7Iwc

I appreciate the reply. Still seems wrong to me. In cases where there is community transmission, the mask shouldn't be merely considered. It should be always mandatory, because there is more evidence for it than hand washing at this point (for COVID).

Good news is that by & large, people are wearing masks in these situations, regardless of the guidance. But for a disease where so much spread is presymptomatic, we can't just have these precautions only where there are symptoms or a known exposure. Patients also conceal symptoms

Yep. Especially given what we know about a/pre-symptomatic transmission. By the way, we met with that committee multiple times and politely presented the overwhelming evidence for the existence of a/pre/pauci-symptomatic transmission. This puts HCW unnecessarily at risk.

And yes, many are wearing masks despite the guidance, but that's a terrible scenario for public health. It's October of 2020. Authorities/people shouldn't be looking around on Twitter for the right experts; we should be able to rely on authoritative and comprehensive guides.

And I am genuinely pained by all this, and keep hoping they will take action so that we don't have to keep prodding them publicly. So many people have been working, quietly and politely, for so many months, to get these things updated. Hopefully soon.
