The biggest tell that COVID contrarians are full of it is that they use Sweden as their anti-lockdown success story instead of Japanhttps://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1311728944685682688 …

Yes! As I explain in my piece, the polarization around Sweden is not useful because Sweden is a middling country—not that lax but also not great. It's not an example of success OR failure of herd immunity or lockdowns. Japan, though, is *very* interesting. https://twitter.com/chip_uni/status/1311727369086922757 …

What was the key to Japan's surprise success vs #COVID19 with limited testing, lockdown "lite"? "By doing things in a uniquely Japanese way, we were able to almost completely end this wave of infection"—@AbeShinzo https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/29/world/asia/japan-coronavirus.html?searchResultPosition=2 … by @BenjaminDooley https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1266120709530476546 … pic.twitter.com/AGQasIuRci

Yep! Also, admittedly, Japan was puzzling early on. I did not understand what was going on till I started reading their epi documents. No doubt they also got lucky (unlike South Korea) but they also got so much right from early on. Fortune favors the prepared and evidence-based.

Wow, huge fan of both your work! Did Japan every publicly state what their strategy was? I remember it being very puzzling early on, too, and I'm curious if part of it was that they never really announced their plan, like Sweden did, and just quietly executed.

There was some journalism, not enough, and not enough primary documents were translated and some people started volunteering to translate them and that's when I started being able to read it directly.

Got it, thanks. I think a lot of people just lumped Asia together early on without looking into the nuances of each country's response.
