Bonnie Stewart added,
Luckily, schools for younger children are much much less risk (as long as we keep the adults from infecting each other). Colleges not much so. High schools are tough and need much higher measures.
what age do you see the split, Zeynep? here (Ontario) f2f classes for gr 7/8 are up to 30. on the ventilation front it's getting cold soon.
Under 12 seems relatively safer, the risk starts ticking up with age from there on. So, ventilation plus masks gets even more important from there on. But there are really encouraging findings on K-6 around the world (again, as long as adults are kept apart).
In the US, they are putting even K-3 on remote while forcing the teachers to come to school to teach from there, in the same building. UUUAAARGH!
AARGH. compliance over health. (even putting aside the challenges remote creates for K-3 & families) appreciate the tl;dr on 7/8s. the organization of schools here keeps kids in elementary til age 14, so boundary's blurry.
Yeah, though many researchers are using 12-14 as the fuzzy boundary. I think college is certainly not okay, as 20-40 is driving transmissions in most places (young enough to keep moving while sick but much more infectious compared to kids).
