Since WHO formally acknowledged airborne transmission (not only droplets & surfaces) this week, a good time to remember that its been known since January. Dismissal of E Asian expertise (Mask-up! Avoid 3C's! lots of in-home transmission!) has been costlyhttps://twitter.com/Laurie_Garrett/status/1281295115999481862 …

Let this sink in. So much of the surge in US #COVID19 cases stems from 4 sources: Prisons, meatpacking biz, bars, churches, and large gatherings. Today the @nytimes posted on line the entire list of COVID clusters. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage … pic.twitter.com/Dyo44XscN5

Diamond princess cruise ship was test-tube to learn about virus. Oshitani & Japanese scientists found ppl aboard who followed precautions against droplets & close contact got infected anyway — a vital clue about aerosol transmission. Helpful thread by @jljcolorado informally surveying aerosol scientists on relative weights of modes of transmission. US/EU epidemiologists difficulty accepting aerosol mode a shadow of winning fight against 19thC miasma theory. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/11rY9tQtkFaV_M4N-hf5qp1_Xtuw8JYb4Qvv5e7BEmcc/edit#slide=id.p … https://twitter.com/jljcolorado/status/1291423116288094208 …pic.twitter.com/GdP04lMpyQ

Timestamp, 20th Sep: Bittersweet win for science. So much panic w all the "don't go outside" restrictions while less attention on indoor 3C's where most infections happen. Just yesterday saw middle-aged ppl crammed INSIDE a restaurant. Formal CDC acknlgmt that aerosols remain in the air for mins to hrs & infect by inhalation is imp. Conveys that distancing 6ft can't be a substitute for wearing masks indoors. It also puts onus on public/pvt owners to ventilate & use filters. Useful FAQ http://tinyurl.com/faqs-aerosol pic.twitter.com/A6jrQg6DRB

While the rest of us dumb ppl in early February were going to bars, sitting in crowded cinemas, singing at religious places, speaking loudly in restaurants, the president of the US knew from talking to Xi that the virus spreads easily airborne in aerosols.https://twitter.com/70sBachchan/status/1304931298155339776 …

Its prolonged contact in closed indoor places where most superspreading events happen. This is the best article written on Covid in months. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/09/k-overlooked-variable-driving-pandemic/616548/ … Oshitani's "cluster-busting", "Avoid the 3C's" approach -that @Zeynep superbly lays out- was based on figuring out overdispersion & aerosol transmission in March! Holy moly! you've got to be kidding me. Did they do it from diamond princess? I mean, the strong prior of overdispersion from SARS/MERS would have focused their attention, but wow!
