I have long opposed the natural born requirement and I feel vindicated by this. But fine, as long as you're a health czar of some kind--I won't let the perfect be the enemy of the good

Hah. There are actual excellent health scientists out there. *slinks back even further* Joking aside, it's kind of staggering how little we seem open to learning from other places that have had a much better, more evidence-based, balance of measures.

yep. I think there's a great deal of risk/loss aversion at play, but primarily we've just used one move--lock down--that we flip off and on like a lightbulb. We need the nuances and the nimbleness to shift with changing knowledge.

Although I will say that I feel like we've never really recovered from the national testing debacle we started with, and have been behind the eight ball ever since.

That was certainly a huge stumble and it's hard to right the ship after a big early blunder. That said, it's just very human to think if only we sacrifice some more, it should all work out. But it's a virus, not a moral agent. Data-driven and flexible works better than pure pain.
