Saying "viruses are mutating" in real life is like saying "fish are swimming". In movies, it means something terrible has occurred. In science, it means time has passed. More transmissible? Maybe. Founder effects in an overdispersed pandemic? Also maybe.https://twitter.com/MoNscience/status/1308842070786924544 …

I don't get why The Post is pushing this narrative around one coronavirus mutation when: A) It's a founder mutation that hasn't functionally changed how this virus operates. B) Their sources (@K_G_Andersen) are telling them that. https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/09/23/houston-coronavirus-mutations/ … pic.twitter.com/LG2rYXWpHp

Tragically, it seems no longer possible for an ordinary person (without some background in the science *and* a lot of time in their hands) to be informed of the state of the pandemic by reading most traditional media outlets frequently. Better to catch up every other week or so.

I don’t see why media outlets don’t hire or at least have science consultants so they can write more accurately.

I have fallen back on just looking at case counts, hospitalizations, and reported deaths (with some deeper digging into the deaths to see, at a glance, how many are the dubious "92 year old falls and fractures skull while having COVID") Reporting has been, in aggregate, abysmal

It’s not just the pandemic. Too many are pushing an agenda, right and left. We are getting different facts depending on whom we are reading or watching. Often times it’s not untrue, just not the whole picture. This is *really* dangerous.

Seriously. I have no idea what is going on? A month ago, I heard that cloth masks/bandanas might be WORSE than no masks because "it's possible the fabric breaks up bigger particles into smaller particles that can remain airborne longer" and yet ... who knows anything?!

Yes, it needs both. Frankly, I think in general people need more both, but that’s another story.

I know where you are coming from but the fact that we have so much community transmission of an RNA virus that shows evidence of mutating/evolving IS bad. One of the main reasons to minimize widespread transmission/independent outbreaks is because they evolve.

The same way we don't understand how this thing jumped to humans, we can end up with a deadlier version or a version that can bypass the currently developing vaccines.

Is it really just “traditional media outlets”? Weren’t you and others kneecapped by the CDC withdrawal of their new guidance this week? Seems like that’s a big deal when it comes to public understanding of the virus and trust in information.
